What Do I Need to Know About Abortions?
There are major risks to be aware of when considering abortion. The two types of procedures. One procedure is medical, meaning medication is used. The other type of procedure is surgical.
Medication Abortions
The most common type of medication abortion uses two types of abortion pills: Mifepristone and Misoprostol. They are normally taken within seven weeks of the first day of your last period. Medication abortion should only be done up to 10 weeks of pregnancy.
The first pill, Mifepristone is taken at a doctor’s office or clinic and blocks a hormone called progesterone. This causes the lining of the uterus to thin and stops the embryo from growing/implanting. The second pill, Misoprostol is taken at home, which causes the uterus to contract and expel the embryo through the vagina. A follow-up with a doctor is recommended about a week later (FDA).
The risks of medication abortions include:
- Infection
- Fever
- Digestive system discomfort
- Incomplete abortion, which may need to be followed by surgical abortion
- An ongoing unwanted pregnancy if the procedure doesn’t work
- Heavy and prolonged bleeding
Surgical Abortions
The other type of abortion procedure is a surgical abortion. In this surgical procedure, the fetus is removed from the uterus through the vagina using suction or an instrument called a curet.
The risks of surgical abortions include:
- Infection
- Cervical tears or lacerations
- Uterine perforation
- Hemorrhaging
- Retained products of conception
- Allergic or adverse reactions to medications
